OBIT: DIES FRIDAY AFTER SEVERAL YEARS ILLNESS
Ill for several years, John F. Huffman, 73, retired grocer died
at ?
a.m. Friday June 30, 1939 at his home on E. Attica Street.
Mr. Huffman was born November 6, 1865 in Ludlow Illinois, son of John and
Martha Huffman. He was a member of the Christian Church. On March 26, 1886 he
was married to Margaret Ann Cox who preceded him in death. He was latter
married to Lucy Bray in 1925.
Surviving are his widow and seven children. Jame E. Huffman, Orland,
California; Leo F. Huffman and Mrs. Sarah Jane Black, Mrs. Martha Ann
Bernand, Cordelona Combs all of Rossville, Mrs. Mabel Marie Fieldings of
Milford, and Mrs. Flora Louis Cheney of Cincinnati , Ohio
The Rev. Paul D. Magnuson conducted the funeral services at 2:00 p.m.
Sunday at the Church of Christ.
Burial was in the Neal Rose Cemetery near Bismarck.

OBIT: DEATH CLAIMS FORMER POSTMASTER
Leo J. Byrne, former postmaster of Rossville and for the past 16
years
associated with the Youngstown Steel Mill, east Chicago, died at 1:40 p.m.
Sunday, April 30, 1939 at his home in East Chicago. Death came one day
following his 61st birthday anniversary.
Mr Byrne was born in Rossville. April 29, 1878, son of James and
Elizabeth Doyle Byrne.
Surviving are a daughter, Bernice of Danville, two sons, James of
Danville and Ed of East Chicago and a brother John Byrne of Rossville.
The body was brought to the John Byrne home in Rossville on Tuesday where
funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. George Boetcher,
pastor of the St. John Evangelical church of Danville, officiated.
Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Louis Felgenhauer, Mrs. Clark Carter, Mrs..
C. E. Morgan, Mrs. Walter Ennis, Mrs. Don Prillaman, Mrs. A. J. Schroeder.
Pallbearers were Tell Brown, S. E. Layton, George Miller, Samuel Miller,
Harvey Young and Harry Musk. Burial was in the Miller Cemetery east of
Rossville.

OBIT: SERVICES WILL BE HELD FRIDAY FOR CHARLES LAMAR
Charles La Mar, 57, died in a Kankakee hospital at 9:15 a.m.
Monday March
7, 1938. He had been ill a year, heart trouble and complications causing his
death.
Charles Wesley La Mar was born March 29, 1880 in Gilman, Illinois , son
of George and Eliza Snyder La Mar. He was married to Edith Mc Cool July 16,
1903 in Danville. Mr. La Mar was formerly employed with the C. & E. I.
Railroad and has resided in Rossville the past six years.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Edith La Mar, and eight children, Herman of
Chicago; Mrs. Ethel Bediner of Hammond Ind; Delbert of Lansing, Ill. Richard
of San Diego, Ca.; Genevieve, Louise Vernon and Verlin at home and one
brother, Jesse La Mar of Georgetown.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Elwood church
near Georgetown. The Rev. Mrs. Minnie Hollingsworth will conduct the
services.
Burial will be in the Elwood Cemetery with Freese and Sons in charge.

OBIT: PNEUMONIA TAKES OLDEST MALE RESIDENT
Phillip Y. Peterson , 92, died at 9:10 a.m. Sunday December 4,
1938 at Lake
View Hospital Danville where he was a patient one week ill with pneumonia.
Mr. Peterson was born in Salem county, New Jersey, November 11, 1847 son
of Samuel and Jane Paden Peterson. When he was 7 years old the family moved
to Indiana and a year later to Peoria. Mr. Peterson well remembered the
family passing through the then small village of Danville enroute to Peoria.
He was married to Allie Chaney February 23, 1872 who died in 1894. Four
children were born to this union. He later married Mrs. Addie Shannon who
also preceded him in death.
Mr. Peterson came to Vermilion County in March 1882 and built a home east
of town. He retired from farming in 1899 and moved into Rossville where he
was active in church and civic affairs. He was a member of the Christian
Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Kate Hundley and Mrs. Della Bowman who
lived with him, Mrs. Bessie Youngblood, Rossville and Mrs. Myrtle Layton,
Gary Ind. 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and a great great
grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Freese Funeral
Home, the Rev. Paul D. Magnuson , pastor of the Christian church officiating..
Six Grandsons were pallbearers, and six grand-daughters flower bearers.
Burial was in the Rossvile Cemetery with Freese in charge.

OBIT: HEART ATTACK FATAL TO G. H. PRILLAMAN: WELL KNOWN GRAIN DEALER
Death dealt a crushing blow to Rossville and vicinity early Saturday morning
when Glenn H. Prillaman, well known grain dealer and advisor to
many, passed
away at 1)30 a.m. in his home following a heart attack.
Stricken at 12:30 a.m. he seemingly recovered and made a light of his
ils. The second attack came shortly after 1:00 o'clock. From this one he
never recovered. The family was called and his widow and three sons were at
his side until the end.
Last rites were conducted Monday, January 2, 1939 at 2:00 p.m. in the
Church of Christ with the Rev. Paul D. Magnuson officiating.
Mrs. H. Monroe Johnston, a cousin of the deceased and her son Robert sang
two selections.
Flowers were in charge of Mesdames R. H. Poland, S. E. Layton, Russell
Young, Harvey Young, George Finck, Roy Mitchell, L. H. Schlecht, Clarence
Morgan, Ray Tilton, Ennis Battershell, Mrs. Georgena Ingram and Miss Pearly
Applegate.
Pall Bearers were, Roy Meredith, R. H. Poland, Elemr McNeal, Harvey
Young, John A. Crays and Claude Kelly.
Interment in the Rossville cemetery with Jeanes and Moore in charge.

OBIT: FATHER OF MRS. J. PRATHER BURIED FRIDAY
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Berhalter Funeral Home
in Danville for Dr. George T. Cass, 69, father of Mrs. John D.
Prather,
Rossville,
The Rev. A. F. Bremicker, D. D., pastor of the Presbyterian Church ,
Danville conducted the services.
Dr. Cass prominent physician and surgeon, died at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday
March 12, 1941 at the St. Elizabeth hospital where he had been a patient
since Sunday, ill with pneumonia.
Dr. Cass was a member of the American Medication Association , The
Illinois Medical and Vermilion county Societies , being a former president of
the local County organization. He also served as Vice President of the
Aesclapias Society.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter , Mrs. Prather, Rossville and a
son Gordon Cass of Terre Haute Indiana. Interment was in Atherton Cemetery.

OBIT: DIES AFTER OPERATION
Following a surgical operation, Mrs. Louise Landsdown, 65, 119
Robinson St. ,
Danville, died at the Lake View hospital Monday evening September 26, 1938.
Mrs. Landsdown was born east of Rossville March 1873, daughter of George
and Anna Miller. She was married in 1902 to Jesse Landsdown who preceded her
in death five months ago.
Surviving are three sons, Frank Landsdown, Marshfield , Ind.; Paul of
Calumet City, Ind. And Russell, Oakwood; a daughter Mrs. Gertrude Clapp of
State Line, Ind.; four sisters Mrs. Pearl Ennis and Mrs. Mary Miller of
Potomac; Mrs. Maude Hushaw of Rossville and Mrs. Elsie Songer of Berkley,
Mich.; four brothers Andrew, George and Samuel Miller of Rossville and Grover
Miller of Bismarck.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Benson
Chapel, Foster, Ind.
Interment in the Miller Cemetery east of Rossville.

OBIT: RETIRED BISMARCK FARMER DIES WED. SEPT. 9
Death came to Joseph F. Shoemaker, 71, prominent retired farmer
of
Bismarck at his home at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 1937. Death was due
to complications.
Mr. Shoemaker was born near Bismarck February 10, 1866, son of Simon and
Elizabeth Thompson Shoemaker. He is survived by his widow, Anna.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the M. E. Church of
Bismarck, Rev. E. R. Poore officiating with burial in Gundy Cemetery.
Mr. Shoemaker is a relative of Mrs. Ora Shoemaker and sons Eugene and
Harold of Rossville.

OBIT: RETIRED FARMER DIES AT ALVIN
Alfred E. Bingham, retired farmer, 67, died at 5:00 p.m.
Thursday, March 3,
1938 at the home of his niece, Mrs. Ollie Bivans Alvin, where he has been
residing for several years. Death was due to heart trouble.
Mr. Bingham was born April 22, 1870 near Alvin, son of James and Harriett
Bingham.
Surviving are three nieces, Mrs. Biviins; Mrs. Jennie Draper, Danville
and Mrs. Maude Allison, State Line, Ind. A nephew William Cavin Stockland,
California.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday Afternoon at the
Christian church with Rev. O. J.. Thomas officiating. Burial was in the
Bethel Cemetery

OBIT: RETURNED TO ROSSVILLE FOR BURIAL SAT.
Funeral services were conducted at the Ross Prather Home. Tuesday
afternoon for Benjamin Terhune Cooper, 49, brother of Mrs.
Prather.
Mr. Cooper, a resident of Waukegan, died Saturday August 12, 1939 at
Cassville, Wisconsin following a two day illness. Death was attributed to
internal hemorrhages.
He was born April 5, 1890 near Cheneyville, Illinois.
Mr. Cooper had been employed as service man for the American Can company
twenty years and was servicing machinery at Cassville at the time he was
stricken.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Margaret Cooper; his mother, Mrs. Beth
Martin of Danville; his father, Samuel D. Cooper of Rossville and his sister,
Mrs. Prather of Rossville.
Rev. Paul D. Magnuson, pastor of the Christian church was in charge of
the services held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday. Burial was in the Rossville Cemetery
with Freese in charge.

OBIT: PASSES AWAY THURSDAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS; BURIED SAT.
Mrs. Sarah Ann Wallen, wife of Frank Wallen died at her home
Thursday
afternoon September 3, 1936 at 4:30 o'clock following a seven weeks illness.
Death was due to complications.
Mrs. Wallen was born May 4, 1867 in Blount Township daughter of Mathew
and Nancy Dodson Lockhart. Her marriage to Mr. Wallen occurred at Danville
March 4, 1886. They observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary this year.
Surviving with the husband are the following children: Fred Wallen,
Humbolt, Kansas, Mrs. Nellie Reynolds, Hoopeston, Mrs. Opal Unger, Thomas
Station, Illinois and Miss Netie Wallen at home.
Mrs. Wallen also leaves seven grandchildren and three sisters; Mrs. Nancy
Maskell, Medaryville, Ind. Mrs. Mary O. Toole, of Hillary Illinois. Mrs.
Judy Reeder of Gary , Ind. and one brother John Lockhart of Williamsport,
Ind.
Funeral services were held at the home at 2:30 p.m. Sataurday, the Rev.
A. H. Flagge, pastor of the Rossville M. E. Church of which she was member,
officiating . Burial was in the Rossville Cemetery.

OBIT: J. W. WHITE BURIED HERE SUNDAY
John Wesley White, 64, former Rossville resident died at 4:00
a.m. Friday
April 15, 1938 at the St. Elizabeth hospital in Danville where he had been
seriously ill a week.
Mr. White was born in Gifford, Illinois son of Lucy Welles and Syrus C.
White. He was well known in the vicinity, and was accountant with the local
Y. M. C. A. during his residence in Rossville. At the time of his death he
was accountant with the Y. W. C. A. in Gary Ind.
He was a member of the Methodist church.
Surviving are the widow, Lou Galyen White; two brothers, Hazen of
Danville and Frank of Royal Center, Ind. Four sisters, Mrs. Dora Paulson and
Mrs. Clara Mason of Rossville. Mrs. Olive Dodson of Crawfordsville, Ind. and
Mrs. Sarah McConnell of Danville.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the Methodist church in
Rossville. Interment was in the Rossville Cemetery.

OBIT: MOTHER OF J. T. DAVIS DIES TUESDAY
Mrs. J. A. Davis, 82, mother to James T. Davis of Rossville,
died suddenly at
11:00 a.m. Tuesday Mar. 4, 1941 at the home of her daughter Mrs. Nettie Sager
in Hoopeston. Death was caused by a heart attack.
Mrs. Davis was born near Eugene Indiana November 15, 1858 the
daughter of Levi and Mary Ann Davis Gephart. She was married to John A.
Davis in 1878 who preceded her in death May 27, 1913.
Surviving are three children, Mrs. Sager and Mrs. George Liggett of
Hoopeston and Mrs. Davis of near Rossville.
Mrs. Davis was a member of the First Church of Christ and of the Loyal
Women's Bible Class of that church. She was also a member of the Prairie
Rebekah Lodge of Hoopeston.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Today (Thursday) in the Hamilton
Funeral Home in Hoopeston, the Rev. Kent M. Dale, officiating. Burial was in
the Floral Hill Cemetery.

OBIT: ILLNESS FATAL TO ROSSVILEAN Miss Almyra Bogart
Rossvilleâ (cns) an extended illness with tuberculosis ended fatally for Miss
Almyra Bogart, 67, at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 1942 in the Vermilion County
Tuberculosis Hospital at Danville where she had ben confined nine months.
Miss Bogart was born Jan. 9, 1875 in Fithian, daughter of Moses and
Lucretia Strawser Bogart.
Surviving are a sister and four brothers, Estella and H. F. Bogart of
Rossville, and Harmon Bogart, Gary Ind.
Last rites will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the family residence here on E.
Attica St. Burial in Rossville Cemetery, Freese in charge.

OBIT: DEATH CLAIMS AGED RESIDENT OF BISMARCK VICINITY AT SON'S HOME IN
HOOPESTON
Mrs. Sarah McCormick
Bismarck----Resident of Bismarck vicinity for many years, Mrs. Sarah Ruth
McCormick, 84, died at 11 : 00 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1942 at the home of a
son, James R. McCormick in Hoopeston.
Born April 21, 1857 , at Bismarck, she was the daughter of William S. and
Naomi Claypool Ogdon who came to this community from Kentucky in 1850 . She
moved with her parents to Missouri and for a time lived near Painesville
where she was married to James M. McCormick. They then moved to near Bismarck
where they spent the rest of their life. Mrs. McCormick was a member of
Bismarck Church of Christ.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. C. A. E. Sheets of Hoopeston and Mrs.
Stanley Matthews, east of Bismarck; and five sons, Water of Ambia, Ind.
,Frank of Potomac, Ross of Vienna Illinois, James R.. of Hoopeston and John
of Danville. Her husband and a daughter preceded her in death in 1940. The
body was taken Thursday to the home of a daughter Mrs. Stanley Matthews of
Bismarck where it will remain until services at 2p.m. Friday at Church of
Christ in Bismarck with the Rrev. Grover Moss officiating. Burial in Gundy
Cemetery with Lanham in Charge.

OBIT: HENNIING WOMAN DEAD Flora Jane Hamilton
Death came to Mrs. Flora Jane Hamilton, 77, of Henning, widow of John
Hamilton about 1 a.m.
Thursday, Feb. 5, 1942, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Hamilton was born Mar. 20, 1864 in Ohio a daughter of Aaron and
Mathilda copies Meeker.
Surviving are one son, John W. Smith 1203 Dakota St; 9 Grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren and two brothers John Meeker, South Danville and Lee
Meeker, Bismarck.
The body is at Edmund and Dickson Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are
incomplete.

John Rosser
The funeral of John Rosser, who died from a gunshot wound accidentally inflicted by
himself while hunting near Westville Monday was held at the home of his brother Paul
Rosser 1114 Tennessee street. Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock.Rev. W.J. Caldwell pastor of
Bethel Presbyterian church officiated. The body was taken via the Wabash to West Lebannon,
Ind. for burial.

Sophia Rosser Ill For Month Taken By Death
Mrs. Sophia F. Rosser, 71 died Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Oht, seven miles northeast of Danville, from infirmilties of age. She had been ill four weeks. The deceased was born in Germany Jan, 25,1857. Surviving her besides the daughter at whose home she died are one stepson Rudoplh Rosser of Lafayette, Ind, and four grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Burial will be in Springhill cemetery. Funeral services for Mrs. Sophia Rosser will be held Wedenesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home. Burial will be in Spinghill Cemetery.
