Douglas School

Information provided by Linda

"Illiana Genealogical magazine is where I got most of the information."

Douglas School was opened in 1876 with the original name of East Land or Rabbittown. This school, consisting of three one-story buildings was partially bordered by Park Street, Sager Avenue,( which at the time was called Green Street), and Bryan Avenue. It was used for grades one through four. As the years passed Douglas was expanded into a two story, eight room school.

In 1914, the present Douglas School was opened complete with an auditorium which was also used for physical education classes during the winter. The school is located on the corner of Wayne Street and Florida Avenue. This building consists of three floors including a basement.

The current building is to be torn down and replaced by a one story building sometime after this current school year.

"As a quick personal note, I am proud to be a member of four generations of Muirheads who attended this fine school. I not only attended Douglas School as a student, but also taught there as a Special Education teacher."
